Harnessing natural materials for the built environment

With expertise in earthquake engineering, soil mechanics behavior, materials characterization and behavior, foundations engineering, nondestructive evaluation, CEE researchers are advancing the combined use of natural and engineered materials in the design of dams, tunnels, highways, airports, and foundations for an array of structures.

Active research areas include:

  • Climate data sources and influences for pavement design and performance
  • Dynamic soil properties
  • Fatigue, durability, and performance modeling
  • Geotechnical aspects of pavement design and performance
  • Machine foundations
  • Pavement and highway materials nondestructive testing
  • Soil liquefaction
  • Stiffness-based methods for quality assurance of unbound material compaction
